Associated British Ports (ABP) instructed main contractor VolkerStevin to reconstruct berths 201 and 202 to form a new quay in preparation for the arrival of the next generation of ultra-large container carriers at the Port of Southampton. The initial £80m phase involved the construction of a 500m quay wall with a 16m draft. Concast supplied 248 separate Precast units ranging in weight from 17T to 36T. We manufactured substantial and complex bespoke steel moulds for each unit type and all units were manufactured utilising Zemdrain® CPF formwork liners which were attached to the formwork face facilitating the removal of excess air and water from the formwork / concrete interface during the concreting process thus resulting in a high quality concrete surface with significantly increases durability. A concrete mix incorporating GGBS was deigned by Concast in order to further enhance durability and longevity. Concast have worked with VolkerStevin on other large scale projects including Felixstowe Port and Colwyn Bay.
